Uruguay's first private nautical community, on the Santa Lucía river
About
Marina Santa Lucía bills itself as Uruguay's first private nautical community. It lies in Ciudad del Plata (San José department) on the west bank of the Santa Lucía river, opposite the Santiago Vázquez bridge on Ruta 1 and about a mile from the Río de la Plata. Montevideo is roughly 15–30 minutes away by car and Colonia about an hour and a half.
The project began in the late 1980s, when a group of entrepreneurs bought the old Casarino shipyard and the adjoining land to create a village for boaters and anglers. Today it is an established community of year-round and weekend homes, many of them with their own jetty or mooring on internal canals.
According to the agencies selling there, it has more than 100 lots with private moorings or floating docks with individual berths, a slipway and year-round boat maintenance. Facilities also include a club house with bar and restaurant, a gym, football, basketball and volleyball courts, and a children's play area.
Access is controlled and there is 24-hour security; internal streets are private and paved. The setting is within the Santa Lucía wetlands, a protected area with islands, native woodland and birdlife. Listings show plots of about 1,400–2,000 m²; there is no public information on common charges or building rules.
It suits people who sail or fish and want to live close to Montevideo in a natural, gated setting.
